Job Purpose Provide specialist knowledge to support colleagues in the effective management of patients with diabetes within an in-patient and outpatient setting. Provide ongoing professional and clinical leadership to deliver evidence based care as part of the wider multidisciplinary team.

Perform a diabetic foot exam and screening. Provide full medical foot care treatments for toenails and skin (Medical Pedicure) Provide skin moisturizing demonstration. Offer health teaching and hand-outs.

There is no one defined pathway to becoming a diabetes specialist nurse (DSN). Many current DSNs have entered the profession by chance, and after finding incredible personal rewards from the profession, have dedicated their careers to caring for people with or affected by diabetes.

Such roles are characterised by advanced clinical skills and competences, a higher degree of autonomous decision-making, along with the remit to diagnose, treat and prescribe. They require an education to Master's level, as well as prescribing qualifications. 3 years post registration experience is often required.
