Job Purpose Provide specialist knowledge to support colleagues in the effective management of patients with diabetes within an in-patient and outpatient setting. Provide ongoing professional and clinical leadership to deliver evidence based care as part of the wider multidisciplinary team.

Nurses with basic or advanced training in professional foot care provide thorough foot assessments and provide toenail, callus, corn and fungal nail care. Those with diabetes should be treated by a nurse with advanced foot care training. Care is provided in a clinic setting.

There is no one defined pathway to becoming a diabetes specialist nurse (DSN). Many current DSNs have entered the profession by chance, and after finding incredible personal rewards from the profession, have dedicated their careers to caring for people with or affected by diabetes.

A specialist nurse is an expert nurse with a background in a particular area, for example bowel cancer. They provide information, practical and emotional support and act as your key worker (a point of contact for you and your carers) throughout your treatment.
